Charlene Kodi, a mental health professional in full time private practice in Shelly Beach, is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Counselling Psychologist. Originally from Port Shepstone on the south coast, she completed her primary school education at Jai Hind Primary and then went on to matriculate from Port Shepstone Secondary School in 1984. She initially pursued her tertiary studies in the field of education at the Natal University, now called the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UKZN), and during her career as an educator, she went on to complete post-graduate qualifications in psychology at UNISA and thereafter graduated with a Masters degree in Social Science from UKZN.

She has a wealth of experience and expertise in terms of psychosocial intervention for children, adolescents and adults, having served in the field of education for 22 and-a-half years, both as a primary school educator and as a senior education specialist at the departmental offices in Port Shepstone. Being in the education sector has afforded her numerous opportunities of working closely with learners, educators and other key role players in education, networking very well with people in other government departments, as well as with parents and other relevant stakeholders in rural and urban communities, in attempts to address the psychosocial difficulties faced by both learners and adults in the various communities.

She has constantly endeavoured to keep abreast with the latest trends in the field of psychology by attending various seminars and conferences on Trauma Management, ADHD, Pervasive Development Disorders, specifically Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, Managing Learning Disabilities, Emotional Intelligence and Motivational Interviewing as well as Team Building, Conflict Resolution and Anger Management. Her expertise encompasses facilitation of professional development courses for educators on Care and Support for HIV/AIDS infected and affected persons, Lay Counselling, Bereavement Counselling and Study Skills and Examination Techniques. Her knowledge and experience has been greatly extended due to the practical work completed at the psychology department at Albert Luthuli Hospital as well as at the department of education, and she continues to learn, grow and develop in her private practice. She deals with children, adults, couples and families, and uses a variety of therapeutic modalities that include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Brief/Solution Focussed Therapy, Filial Therapy and Play Therapy for children. Her professional service also includes Intellectual, Emotional, Behavioural and Career Assessments, Career Counselling, Individual Psychotherapy for Adolescents and Adults, Couple Therapy, Family Therapy and Effective Parenting Skills.

As part of her social responsibility, she readily gives off her time offering free counselling sessions at her local church, Radiant Life Ministries, to the people of the local community. Her services include Christian and professional counsel and intervention for children and adults on various issues ranging from low self-esteem, anger and aggression, fear and anxiety, poor academic achievement, depression, suicide, parent-child relational problems, ADHD, conflict/stress, bereavement and trauma. Charlene runs a successful private practice in Shelly Beach and is available for consultation by appointment only on selected days. She is also available on a Friday from 08H00 to 14H00 at the church, Radiant Life Ministries.
